This carbine bears a serial #15713. All gunmetal wears a smooth, dark plumb patina with very little pitting.
Carbine has a 22.00 inch round barrel with the original folding rear sight and small brass blade front sight. Rear sight is missing one of the pins that holds it to the sight base however, the one that is there is holding everything firm. Bore has good rifling but is slightly dirty with minor pitting near the breech. Barrel is held to the forearm of the stock by a single barrel band.
Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’S MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. Stamping is a little worn but readable. Receiver, trigger guard and hammer all show a uniform dark appearance with the very small amounts of pinprick pitting and some hints of case colors. Action works well.
Oiled walnut stock and forend are in good but used condition with several small dings and dents scattered throughout. There is one closed horizontal crack running approx. 2.00 from the rear of the ring bar mount. Same area has one faint inspector’s cartouche.
The original, steel, tubular loading magazine located in the buttstock is present and in good condition with a good spring.
The sling bar and ring are tightly attached to the stock’s left side. Carbine retains its single sling swivel under the stock near the toe. All of the carbine’s screwheads are in good condition.
Very nice untouched Spencer. [AD] [ph:L]
