breechloading repeating carbine is in good original condition. The carbine, which fired the .52 caliber, “No. 56” Spencer rimfire cartridge, has a 22” long barrel and a two-piece black walnut stock.
Barrel wears a nice pewter/dark gray color. Has the large folding rear sight without slide and the brass “blade” front sight. Receiver, hammer and lockplate of matching color with light scattered pitting. Bore has moderate pitting and good, original six-groove rifling. Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’D. MARCH 6, 1860”. Serial #34599 is located at the top rear of the receiver near the hammer.
Original sling bar and ring are tightly secured to the left side of stock. Retains the single swivel near the stock toe. Original magazine tube and spring. All mechanics are crisp and strong.
Wood is original with usual dings or scratches as well as nice saddle wear and some light chipping around barrel band. No inspector cartouches visible. Initials “L.D.A.” carved into stock near butt plate.
A pleasing and classic original Civil War M1860 Spencer carbine showing honest use. [jet]
