Model 1865 Spencer Repeating carbine in fine untouched condition. These were produced between 1865 and 1866 by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company of Boston, Mass. Two differences from the Model 1860 carbine vs the Model 1865 were its beveled hammer nose and the rounded receiver top surface.
Barrel is 20” long and has the standard front sight and its original rear sight with flip-up leaf and sliding appture. The barrel exhibits a smooth blue coloring that is strong. “M1865” is clearly stamped between the rear sight and the breech. Bore is .50 and has excellent rifling with a super clean appearance.
The frame and receiver show good case colors and is stamped at top of the frame has a strong maker’s mark of “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT’D MARCH 6, …” year is worn. Action works well. Hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls when trigger is squeezed. Hammer matches the finish on the lock. Magazine tube in the butt also seats and unseats properly and has a good spring.
Carbine has a two piece walnut stock in very nice condition and shows very little wear. There is a very thin closed crack or scratch running approx. 4.50 inches long on the left side of the stock. It starts at the edge of the saddle bar mount and runs toward the butt. There are no cartouche marks. Original fore-end is tight and strong. Left side of wrist has saddle bar and iron ring.
Serial # 14003 is at the rear of the frame near the hammer. Lock screws show light wear. Iron butt plate is tight and shows some case coloring as does the triggerguard. This is one of the carbines NOT fitted with the Stable cutoff. Sling swivel is present forward of toe. [ad]
