Item is a Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. Carbine is a .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loader that employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.
Barrel surface is mix of scattered blue and mottling. Surface is smooth with no pitting and has a nice sheen to it. Both the original front and rear sights are present. Bore is excellent and very clean.
Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 34697. The patent mark on top of the frame is thin and almost invisible. Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. Receiver, hammer and lock have light case colors as does the triggerguard. Behind the hammer is a good stamping of “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. PROVIDENCE, R. I.” Action is good but not crisp. Operation of loading mechanism is excellent. Original nipple is present.
Black walnut stock is in nice untouched condition. There is one faint cartouche mark on the left wrist. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age but no cracks. Left butt has period carved initials “JT.” Left side is fitted with a saddle bar and ring.
A nice example of the 5th Model Burnside carbine. [ad]
