Civil War Model 1859 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1859 to 1862. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture.
Carbine serial number of 31550 is located on the barrel tang. Weapon measures 39 ¼” long overall and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece walnut stock that features an iron patchbox. Barrel is bright with light scattered mottling throughout. Barrel has the flip-up rear sight with the sliding appture and Lawrence patent on the base. Maker’s three-line address is strongly stamped forward of rear sight. Bore of barrel is very clean with good rifling.
Lockplate has strong and clear maker and patent stampings. Screws lightly buggered. Mechanics are crisp. Breech block has original nipple with a good amount of discoloration from age and use in this area. Gas check plate is in good condition. Receiver has hints of case colors here and there but is mostly bright. Iron patchbox is the same.
Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with one iron band which has been cleaned. Bottom of the forend has a closed crack running from the base of the breech to the barrel band. Buttstock appears to have been lightly sanded. Toe has a 3.50 “repaired crack. This was well done and is not readily apparent. Wood surface also displays scattered light dents and scratches from age and storage. Two faint but complete government cartouche marks are visible under the saddle bar and ring. Both sling swivels are post-Civil War additions. [ad]
