The Gallager carbine saw extensive use during the Civil War with total production going over 17,000. The weapon offered here has the usual walnut butt stock with iron butt plate and patchbox. Wood has nice color and finish. Moderate dings and scratches with light saddle wear. One inspector’s cartouche remains.
The 22 ¼” round barrel has flip up rear sight and heavy blade front sight. Surface is smooth with nice, even dark gray color with just a few small dings. Lever action operates well as does hammer / trigger action. Screw heads are good. Bore is clean and bright with sharp rifling. Lock is lightly marked “MANUFACTD BY / RICHARDSON & OVERMAN / PHILADA.” with serial number 17160 behind hammer. Rear edge of lock is marked “GALLAGER’S PATENT / JULY 17th, 1860.” Sling bar and ring.
This is a nice Gallager carbine. [jet]
