This item is a Model 1842 Austrian carbine in untouched condition. Carbine is also called the ‘Kammer-Karabiner’ and features a huge.75 caliber barrel that is strongly rifled with twelve lands and grooves. Originally known as a “tube lock’ carbine, these short arms were altered to percussion after 1854 and many saw service in the American Civil War as agents for both sides sought them out in Europe and sent them back to the United States for use.
The carbine measures 30” long overall and features a heavy, one-piece stock, possibly of sap wood. Stock is unmarked with a high cheek piece on the left side. It also shows some original finish and has no cracks. Carbine also has a sling bar with an attached two-piece ring on the left side of stock.
All gunmetal wears a dark patina and heavy mottling. The round, 14½” long barrel secures to the stock with one large barrel band. Top of barrel just forward of bolster is marked “WANZEL.” Barrel and other metal surfaces appear to never have been cleaned. Rear sight is present as is the original front sight. Hammer and lock have no discernable markings. Bore needs cleaned. Looks pitted. Nipple is new replacement. Action works well.
An imported, hand-held cannon that saw service, even possibly in the Civil War. [AD]
