Original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in good serviceable condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.
Carbine retains a lot of its original finish. The barrel has 98% of the original blue. Both the front and rear sight is present as is the single iron barrel band. Barrel surface around the barrel band has numerous small ding marks. It appears that someone tried to get the barrel band off with a hammer. Between the barrel band and the rear sight there is a faint stamping that reads “CAST STEEL 1864.” Bore is excellent and bright.
Breech block and frame have a matching serial number 10141. Above the serial number on the receiver is a strongly stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. Strong case colors remain on the receiver while the breech block retains its original blue though slightly scratched.
Lockplate is faintly marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” and retains hints of original finish. Mechanics are good. Original nipple is present. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.
Black walnut stock is in good, original condition and has two strong cartouche marks on the left wrist area. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. There is also some minor chipping around the rear of the lockplate. There are no visible cracks.
Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring with another keeper on the underside of the butt.
Triggerguard and tang retain original blue.
A nice original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine. [AD]
