The carbine offered here is one of the 5,000 Gallager carbines that were converted to fire rimfire Spencer cartridges. The nipple was replaced by a firing pin and an extractor was added. These were originally contracted for in March of 1865 with delivery in May of that same year. The weapon offered here has a Walnut butt stock with iron butt plate and patchbox. Very little case coloring remains on the butt plate or the patchbox. Stock is light with two strong inspector’s cartouches above and behind the saddle bar and ring. Stock has average wear. Some case color remains on the frame.
Lock is marked “MANUFACTD BY RICHARDSON & OVERMAN PHILADA.” with serial number 20424 behind hammer. Rear edge of lock is marked “GALLAGER’S PATENT JULY 17, 1860.” All markings are complete but lightly stamped in on top line. Barrel is marked “J.M.D.” between rear sight and breech. Flip up rear sight with single leaf. Metal surfaces are very clean. Action operates very well. Hammer holds at half and full cock. Screw heads are good. Bore and rifling are excellent.
This is a very nice Gallager carbine fit for any collection. [jet]
