Item Code: 667-38

The Maynard carbine was regarded as one of the most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the Civil War. This metallic cartridge, breech-loading 2nd Model Maynard carbine was the invention of Doctor Edward Maynard from New Jersey who patented his first model carbine in 1851. The U.S. Ordnance Dept contracted for over 20,000 2nd Model single shot, percussion, .50 caliber carbines which were produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee, Mass. Issued mostly to the Federal cavalry, the Maynard proved a lightweight, very serviceable and dependable arm that saw extensive service in the field.

This carbine carries serial #25620, has a 20.00 inch round barrel, no forend or comb, and measures a total length of 36.50 inches.

The round barrel has a partial octagonal breech and retains most of the original blue finish with scattered spots of oxidation. Blade front sight and two leaf flip-up rear sight are present. Bore is excellent with good rifling.

Frame shows hints of case colors. All maker stampings on the obverse frame are clear and read, “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS” in three lines. Reverse side clearly stamped “EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859” in four lines. Hammer area, triggerguard and butt plate show thinning original blue. Two of the four frame screw heads show wear.  Mechanics are crisp and work properly. Nipple is original.

Black walnut stock is in nice condition and bears two government cartouche marks on the left side of the wrist. One is faint and the other is light but readable. Overall the butt exhibits only light wear. Carbine is fitted with a saddle bar and ring on the left side of the frame.

Serial number is on triggerguard tang with the date “1865.”    [ad]
