This shoulder arm is a Civil War Model 1859 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1859 to 1862. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture, and one of 30,000 units produced by the Connecticut firm.
Carbine serial number of 69512 is located on the barrel tang. Weapon measures 39 ¼” long overall and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece walnut stock that features an iron patchbox. Barrel shows a mix of a plumb brown patina with small amounts of blue in the area of the muzzle. Barrel stamped with a strong “NEW MODEL 1859” at rear of the original folding rear sight. Maker’s three-line address is forward of rear sight and shows only light wear at edges. Base of sight has light patent information. Bore of barrel is dark and dirty with good rifling.
Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with one band. Stock appears to be untouched. Wood surface displays scattered light dents and scratches as well as nice “saddle wear” on butt. There are no cartouches visible.
Lockplate has strong and clear maker and patent stampings back of the hammer. Screws lightly buggered. Mechanics are crisp. Breech block has original nipple with a good amount of pitting from use in this area. Receiver has some case colors visible as does cartridge channel.
This is a classic, hard-to-find, M1859 Sharps carbine in good condition that was used, but not abused.
