Issued to Federal cavalrymen in the late summer of 1863, the Spencer firearm, a .52 caliber seven-shot carbine which utilized a metallic rimfire cartridge, was invented and patented by Christopher M. Spencer in Manchester, CT.
This example is a completely original firearm with serial number 51308 all matching. Over 65,000 Spencer firearms were produced at the Boston factory and another 30,000 produced at the Burnside Rifle Company in Rhode Island.
This very fine Spencer carbine has a smooth gray patina on all the metal surfaces, a pleasing mix of light/dark gray color. Has the original front blade sight and folding rear sight with sliding “V” notch elevation bar stamped in increments to 800 yards. The Spencer patent markings are visible; some of the date markings are faint. The bore with six lands & grooves rifling shows semi-bright with sharp edges. Minor areas of light pitting. Original walnut fore-end is tight with no cracks, minor dings.
Two visible excellent cartouches are stamped into the rear stock, just back of the sling bar. Government sub-inspector mark near sling bar. The walnut stock has no cracks; minor dings with one area with dings over top of the comb. Carbine sling bar and loading tube are original and in fine condition. Screws are in very good condition with clear slots. Mechanics are very strong and tight.
A nice untouched late war production Spencer carbine in very good condition.
