The Model 1856 Pattern Enfield cavalry carbine was originally designed for the British East India Company and later saw service with the horsemen of the India Native Forces, aka the Bengal Lancers. This carbine is part of the family of weapons from the British Model 1853 rifle-musket design. Carbine is a .577 caliber piece and measures 36½” in total length with a 21” long round barrel. The smoothbore muzzleloader features a swivel ramrod attached to a swivel link and a full length maple or sap wood stock that extends to almost the muzzle tip.
Barrel exhibits British proof marks on the left breech area and small arrow inspector marks on various components and frame screws. Barrel has a plain open rear sights with a small blade front sight. It has been cleaned at one time and has had bluing nicely re-applied. It is secured to stock via two iron barrel bands. The flat lockplate has a pleasing dull gray patina and measures 5¼” long. It is marked “1862 / ENFIELD” in front of the rounded hammer with the queen’s crown over “V R (Victoria’s Reign).” Right side stock cheek shows a clear, circular Enfield maker’s identification mark ¾” in diameter.
Stock, which has been gone over, shows normal dings and dents from age and use with a flat that is lightly rounded. Carbine has an integral sling bar with an attached saddle ring on the left side of stock. The smoothbore is bright and clean; no pitting and oxidation. Attached swivel ramrod measures 21” long with a T-shaped head and is marked with a British viewer’s mark near the head. All furniture is brass including a unique, two-piece butt plate, triggerguard and nose cap wear a mellow bronze patina.
