This short arm, produced for the New York State National Guard after the Civil War, exhibits the unique ‘rolling block’ configuration. The ‘rolling block’ action entailed an interlocking system of hammer and breech that was noted as having one of the strongest rifle / carbine actions of the time, as well as the simplest. The carbine, of which a total of 15,000 were produced, is chambered for a 50/ 70 centerfire caliber round. Exhibits the large #1 action size with an extremely high, curved hammer spur, and a thumb lever for the breech block that protrudes outward instead of upwards.
A short (9¼” long) forend is fastened to a 22” long round barrel with a single iron band. Barrel retains a plum / brown patina overall with slight rust pitting in areas. No original case colors or bluing visible. Receiver tang has a clear, 3-line Remington maker address with patent dates. All mountings are iron. Carbine exhibits a small ring bar with sling ring on the left side of frame. Black walnut stock is very good condition and has a single government cartouche in a “banner-style” on left wrist of stock. Inspector likely is “H.B.H.” in cartouche. Barrel bore is clean and shiny bright. Few sub-inspector marks on major components. Single leaf rear sight. High, pinched blade, front sight. Stock shows normal dings, dents and wear from age and use but no cracks. Mechanics are strong. A strong Remington R/B carbine.
