This shoulder arm is a Civil War Model 1859 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1859 to 1862. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture, and one of 30,000 units produced by the Connecticut firm.
Carbine serial # 59705 is located to the rear of the top tang on the action assembly. The shortarm measures 39” long overall and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock that features an iron patchbox. Barrel shows a mix of patina and dark gray with spotty peppering overall. Barrel stamped with a light “NEW MODEL 1859” in front of the original folding rear sight. Maker’s three-line address is forward of rear sight and is visible but very thin from wear. Rifling is good with patches of light oxidation and light peppery pitting, but should clean up to semi-bright or better.
Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with one band. Entire stock appears to have been cleaned or lightly refinished. Wood surface displays scattered light dents and scratches. Also visible are two thin cartouches visible at the wrist beneath the sling bar. Lockplate has strong and clear maker and patent stampings back of the hammer. Screws not buggered up. Mechanics are crisp. This is a classic, hard-to-find, M1859 Sharps carbine in fine condition that was used, but not abused.

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
