This single-shot, percussion shortarm used during the Civil War is an original Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading specimen called the New Model 1863. It was invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps.
In good original condition, this carbine bears serial # 95911 and has a 21½” long round barrel with a ‘straight-breech’ type receiver and lockplate. Two-piece dark black walnut stock and forend are in very good condition. Right side of stock has an iron patchbox. Bottom of stock 3” from the toe has a factory repair where the sling swivel was located. Two government inspector cartouches are clearly visible. Lock screws have slight buggering. All metal surfaces of the carbine have been nickel-plated and now exhibit scattered light flaking.
Barrel wears a dark gray / plum coloring. No trace of original colors present. Receiver maker markings and patent designations are clear and readable. Barrel stampings very thin and almost gone. Serial # 95911 is visible. Iron sling ring and bar are tight. Carbine exhibits crisp mechanics. Breechblock lever is stamped with “54”. Bore with its six-groove rifling is dusty and could use a cleaning. This New Model 1863 Sharps carbine is a great original cavalry arm of the Civil War.
