Here is a 2nd Model Maynard carbine widely regarded as one of the best performing and most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the Civil War. The well-favored, metallic cartridge, breech-loading Maynard carbine was the invention of New Jersey doctor Edward Maynard who patented his first model carbine in 1851. Between 12863 and 1865, the U.S. Ordnance Dept contracted for over 20,000 2nd Model single shot, percussion, .50 caliber carbines, that were produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee, Mass. Issued mostly to the Federal cavalry, the Maynard proved a lightweight, very serviceable and dependable carbine that saw extensive service in the field.
Specimen has serial # 6403, a 20” round barrel, no forend or comb, and has a total length of 36½”. Black walnut stock has been lightly cleaned and bears two fine government ‘cartouches’ on the reverse side. Dings and dents are minimal while the left side shoulder stock sports a small inlaid mother-of-pearl crown-like design. Fitted with a sling bar with saddle ring on the left side of the breech frame, the carbine has had the folding two-leaf rear sight replaced with open sights. Stock wears a slightly curved iron butt plate.
The round barrel has a partial octagonal breech area and exhibits dark areas of old rust oxidation along with minor pitting. Frame, hammer area, triggerguard and buttplate show the same dark oxidation. Bore good with sharp three-groove rifling that could clean to semi-bright. All stampings on the obverse frame are clear, sharp, and read, “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS” in three lines. Reverse side clearly stamped “EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859” in four lines. Sub-inspector stampings found on the barrel breech and butt plate. Serial # on triggerguard tang. Carbine exhibits strong mechanics. Some frame screws lightly buggered.
This Second Model Maynard carbine is a great representative cavalry arm of the Civil War at a great price.
