All parts are clean and smooth with dark finish. Lockplate features light stampings, “1863” stamped behind the hammer. Stampings of the “Eagle” are fairly good while the “US / SPRINGFIELD” are again on the light side. The S-shaped hammer has the M1863 style beveled edges. All mechanical components are present and in strong, working order.
The Model 1863 rifle musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts manufactured in late 1863 through 1865. Over two hundred and fifty thousand of these muskets were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Dept. during those war years.
A very good rifle musket component from the first year of production. [jet] [ph:L]
