The blade on this cutlass is in good condition. The surface of the metal is beginning to get a nice patina. There is some very minor surface pitting on both sides of the blade near the point. The true edge has a number of tiny nicks that can be felt rather than seen. False edge is good. A wide fuller starts near the ricasso and stops approx. 6.25 inches from the point. Overall the blade meas. approx. 25.75 inches long. The ricasso is marked “U.S.N. D.R. 1862” while the opposite side has the Ames Manufacturing mark. The number “2” in the date is a little thin as is the Ames mark. The grip is covered in black leather but the wire wrap is gone. The brass basket and counterguard are good but show light wear. Brass is beginning to darken and matches the blade in age and coloring. The top of the counterguard is stamped with “14M 291” in two lines. The leather scabbard is missing its tip. The surface of the leather shows some light scuffing, finish loss and wear. Leather is strong with no weak spots. Brass stud for attaching to fog is present. Cutlass fits nicely.
