Maker mark: reverse ricasso “Ames Mfg. Co./Cabotville/1849”; obverse inspection “US/ WD”. Markings crisp. Bright blade measures 35.25”. Exhibits traces of age & moisture spotting on lower blade, patches of light pitting nearer the tip. Two minor blade dings. Washer present. Hilt assembly tight & symmetrical. Brass pommel & guard display smooth, dark coppery patina. Original leather grip exhibits light wear; wire wrap is tight. Scabbard is straight with pleasing plum colored patina. Throat, carrying rings & drag solid & unblemished. Overall VG. A handsome & solid 1840 “old wristbreaker”.
