This original sword specimen is the Model 1840 N.C.O. sword produced by C. Roby of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Piece is a handsome edged weapon in excellent original condition and typical of that carried by Federal non-commissioned officers. Overall length of the weapon is 38½” and the 32¼” long steel blade shows a pleasing bright finish with very few spots of dark oxidation visible. Sword features the original brass hilt with its original double clamshell guards. Never cleaned, all brass has acquired a pleasing mellow patina. The single-edged blade features a stopped fuller and a ricasso marked on the reverse with “C. ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS” in a circular pattern. Blade is undated and bears no inspector stampings. Obverse side is plain with no markings. Blade edge exhibits no nicks or damage. The tight, strong brass hilt has brass grips with a simulated castbrass wire wrap cover.
Black leather scabbard is excellent. All leather is strong and smooth with just very slight scuffing scattered overall. No weak spots or cracking. Original stitching on the seam is very tight, strong and without blemish. Brass furniture, including the collar with frog clip, and the drag, are tight to the body and both wear a smooth, uncleaned bronze finish. Collar opening retains the red velvet inner sleeve while the drag is unmarked. Carried by Corporals and Sergeants as symbol of authority during the Civil War, this fine collectable specimen of an U.S. marked, Model 1840 Non-commissioned officer’s sword would enhance any edged weapon collection or Massachusetts military display.
