Nice condition Model 1841 naval cutlass. Blade is clean with only light mottling and light surface pitting. The pitting, like the mottling, is scattered but has a heavier concentration in the ricasso area. The surface pitting obscures the maker’s information but the word “AMES” is clearly visible on one side and “U.S. 1846” on the other. The blade edges do not have any nicks. Standard cast brass handle with brass knucklebow that is narrow near the pommel and widens toward the blade ending in a quillon. Quillon is stamped with inspector’s initials “JL” on one side and “RC” on the other. The face of the knucklebow is stamped “16” and “3 D S” in two lines. Also in this area is the # 42 in Roman numerals and some kind of a dot design pattern.
