This cavalry officer’s saber is a British Pattern 1822 specimen manufactured by the firm of W. Clauberg of Solingen, Prussia. The cavalry saber has a two branch steel hilt with single line scribing or tooling on the branches. Steel blade has a slight curve and measures 32¼” long, a width of 1 1/8” with a 22” long stopped fuller and a 13” narrow fuller. Obverse ricasso has the brass circular ‘proved’ disc inlaid in the metal. The mottled, light gray blade has even wear with handsome floral etching on the blade sides. Script letters “U.S.” found on the reverse side while a large spreadwinged eagle rests on the reverse. Blade back stamped “Iron Proof”.
Grips are in very good condition and employ a center-swelled, grooved wooden handle covered with gray sharkskin wrapped tight with copper double twist wire wrap. Single strand of copper wire flank the twist. Sharkskin wrap very good with light wear. A steel top strap runs from the ferrule to the pommel. Steel scabbard is medium gray and shows a mottled salt and pepper coloring with just few spots of pitting. Saber bands, mounts and rings are tight to the body. Scabbard drag has nice angle wear. This imported British Pattern 1822 cavalry officer’s saber is in strong, tight condition and makes an interesting Civil War specimen worthy of any cavalry display or collection.
