Original imported Model 1850 foot officer’s sword with its matching leather scabbard. In good attic-condition, the steel blade measure 32” long, 1” wide, and has a wide stopped fuller 23” long and a 12” long narrow fuller. On the flat of both sides of the blade, starting just above the ricasso is an etched design with much wear.  Reverse flat bears a pleasing design that displays script letters “U S” flanked by delicate foliate scrolls and military motifs. Opposite blade side has the same makeup but features a detailed spreadwinged eagle in the center design with military motifs overall.  Blade is semi-bright in areas and shows scattered peppery pitting and age discoloration. All etching is quite thin and worn. Maker’s name is on the obverse ricasso but is thin and hard to discern. Possibly French made specimen with the name also stamped on the blade back. 

Guard exhibits a detailed cast face with scrolls and oak leaves. Brass hilt looks to have been cleaned at one time and is still tight and secure. Has a shiny bright scheen.  Leather washer is strong and intact.  Original sharkskin grips show mellow patina has the handle wrapped with double-twisted, brass wire. All strands are slightly loose. Brass pommel is decorated with laurel leaves while the casting on the hilt and pommel shows wear and have been cleaned. The black leather scabbard with its brass furniture is a good specimen and exhibits moderate surface cracking and crazing with scuffed spots. Scabbard body strong overall with leather a bit dry. Two brass bands support two suspension sword mounts and rings. Upper and lower bands are plain, as is the drag. All brass furniture has been cleaned to bright.
