Maker mark: “Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee/Mass. Inspector mark: “U.S./J.H./1859.” Maker markings lightly worn, but legible. Straight sharpened blade measures 34.5”, and exhibits light salt & pepper age spotting and pitting near tip, with no dings. Washer worn & thin, but present. Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical, with slight bend in middle branch. Brass patina dark with light grime. Cross guard grip turned down. Original leather grip & wire is tight, with leather exhibiting light wear & cracking. Scabbard is plumb colored with pleasing patina. Overall VG plus. Ames 1859 dated Ames cavalry sabers are highly desirable. Excellent display piece.
