[See Thillman, Cavalry Sabers, p.147.] Maker mark: W/Clauberg/Solingen/Knight stamped on reverse ricasso. Blade measures 35” in length, 1.125” in width at ricasso. It is heavy and large in the 1840 style, and is flat backed with “IRON.PROOF” etched at the base. On its flat sides the blade and etched, frosted foliage at base, and high quality etched eagle [with E Pluribus Unum riband], and “U.S.”. These latter appear in 7” panels on obverse & reverse sides, with seraphs on either side. The blade is bright and ding free. Exhibits light patches of condensation spotting the length the blade, with some light pitting near the tip. Washer present. Hilt assembly tight & symmetrical. Gilt guard is chased with leaf sections top & bottom on inner & outer branches. Also peacock flower spread on the upper tip. Pommel features 1840 Phrygian helmet pattern.
The 1860 model characteristic surfaces in the contoured center swelled grip. Original leather is glossy & absolutely flawless, with tight wiring, linked & bordered. Scabbard mounts & throat are brass, while the drag is iron. Exhibits patches of light pitting the length of the sword. Else VG plus.
In all, a magnificent cavalry officers saber. Superb display piece.
