Overall length is 43.50 inches. The blade meas. approx. 37.50 long and 1.50 inches wide at the ricasso. The blade is dark from age and storage. There maybe some very light scattered pitting. It is hard to tell because if there is any it is very light and the blade is dark. There are two parallel fullers running the length of the blade. Both are stopped at the ricasso but the other end runs right through to the point. Ricasso is stamped with the letter “L” in a square. No other markings are visible in this area. Leather washer at base of counterguard is missing.
The hilt is very similar to the Model 1840 US cavalry saber. Wood grip has black leather cover and twisted wire. Leather and wire are complete with hardly any wear and no breaks just dust and dirt from age. Phrygian style pommel cap with three-armed knucklebow that widens into counterguard. All this is made of cast brass. One side of the counterguard looks as if it was clipped off leaving behind a wavy and uneven edge but the counterguard was cast this way. Knucklebow is stamped with the number “707”, a number “2” and what looks like back to back “R”s. There is no scabbard.
