Sword meas. approx. 28.00 inches overall. The blade meas. approx. 23.00 inches long x 1.50 inches wide at the ricasso. Blade is slightly curved. There is no fuller. The blade is semi-bright with moderate mottling throughout and light scattered pitting. The edge has numerous small nicks. The hilt is cast brass and appears to be cast in one piece. The grip is cast with horizontal ribs while the pommel cap has a rather large cast capstan rivet. The knucklebow starts at the base of the pommel cap and sweeps down to a rectangular shaped counterguard with quillon and finial. The knucklebow is broken where it meets the pommel cap. There is no loss of material. It is a clean break.
This sword looks very much like the 1767 French Grenadier Hanger or ‘briquet.” The grip knucklebow and counterguard are the same but the Grenadier Hanger has a slightly longer blade and a fuller.
