This is the classic "wrist breaker" used before and during the Civil War.
The curved blade is over 35 inches in length. Clearly stamped at the ricasso is “N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1848”. Stamped on the obverse is “US / W.D”. The blade is clean and semi-bright with a moderate amount of graying. A couple of very, very minor edge nicks. The leather washer is present.
The brass hilt has two branches and knuckle bow. The pommel is of the Phrygian helmet style and stamped with inspector’s initials “JWR” and “WD”. All brass has nice, dark patina. The ribbed wood grip remains wrapped in fine leather and tightly wrapped with the double-twist wire.
The steel scabbard is gray/brown in color. It has two large iron mounting rings. The lower 12” on the underside edge of the scabbard exhibits a multitude of small nicks and dings; apparently from being whacked on by another sword. Luckily these are not totally visible in profile view.
An early dated “wrist breaker”. [jet] [ph:L]
