Classic Civil War cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company. Sword is in overall very good condition. Blade exhibits a light pewter color with darker spotting overall. No edge nicks. Ricasso is stamped with a completely visible “AMES MFG / CHICKOPEE / MASS” stamp on one side and “US / ADK / 1863” on the other. Original leather washer remains in place.
Brass guard and basket are good with only a slight bend to the outer branch. Pommel cap has a small “ADK” inspector’s initials on rim. All brass exhibits smooth mellow patina. Grip is in good condition with original leather wrap and double-twist of wire. Leather shows light wear with a small piece missing at the back end.
Scabbard shows light wear. There are no dents. Complete with both rings and throat. Scabbard shows evidence of once being painted or plated, mostly at the throat, while much of the scabbard displays a smooth, pewter/gray tone. A nice specimen. [jet][ph:L]
