This saber based on (and based is the key word) the British Sealed Pattern saber of 1853, was a product contracted through Isaac Campbell & Co of London. It is different in several ways, and this becomes obvious when held side by side with the British issue cousin. This offered sword is a Confederate version exclusively. Not the British Army nor any of the armies in all the colonies used this sword; not Canada, not India, not Australia that belief is Civil War Show mythology. Nor are these sabers old British surplus! The unique Confederate version, offered here, has differences in the hilt design, the blade length (35 inches while the British is 35 1/2 inches) and the shorter scabbard which is also much different when compared to the British (see our attached pictures for the difference).  All British Pattern 1853 swords used throughout the Empire are maker marked and always bear inspector's marks. The confederate imports are found unmarked except for perhaps one out of ten stamped on the spine of the blade " Isaac & Co" or "S.I.C". The contractor marked examples will bring up to three times the money as the unmarked sabers; but all are Confederate! An unmarked example but with "G" for Georgia on the blade was recently offered by Old South Military Antiques.  Major Edward C, Anderson on August 3rd, 1861, requested Isaac Campbell & Co. to order 1000 sabers and on March 10th, 1862, Caleb Huse purchased another "1400 Cavalry Swords" for 1,172 British Pounds that were soon shipped on the blockade runner Minna.

This sword has a great attic patina on the exterior iron parts while the blade is a gun metal gray color with no pitting. The grips are better than most for the type. The sword shows considerable period field use all from service in the saddle. This one "has the look" the Confederate collector craves.  [pe] [ph:L]
