The M-1906 U.S. Cavalry saber is almost exactly like its forefather, the M-1860 Cavalry saber, used throughout the Civil War and on America's frontier during the Indian Wars. It was the last curved saber model produced for Cavalry, with the evolution of vehicular transport, horses were to become a thing of the past following WWI. A straight cavalry sword, known as the “Patton” sword was introduced in 1913 but this new style lost all the magic and mystique of the original curved blade design.

The M-1906 differed from the M-1860 in that the hilt was made from steel and not brass, otherwise they are nearly identical. This was the sword used during the Mexican Border Wars. The most obvious difference is that the ring mounts on the steel scabbard are set much closer together.

The condition of the sword and scabbard is very good. The blade wears a light gray tone with scattered darker spotting. No edge nicks or any other damage to the blade. The steel hand guard and pommel show a nice reddish-brown tone from varnish or paint. The leather grip is complete and without wear. The twisted brass wire wrap is complete and remains tight to the grip. The ricasso is stamped “A.S.Co. / [Flaming Bomb] / 1906” on one side and “U.S / J.H.C.” on the other.  A.S. Co. is the abbreviation for Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts,
one of the largest independent producers of swords for the U.S. Military since the Civil War. J.H.C. is the inspector’s initials. Leather washer remains in place.

The original steel scabbard has a fine dark tone with just a few small dents along the bottom edge. Two ring mounts are tight and secure two 1¼” diameter sword rings. Scabbard retains its throat piece and drag. Inspector’s initials “JC” are found on the drag.

A very nice pre-WW1 sword and scabbard.  [jet][ph:L]
