This saber was adapted in 1840 from the French pattern for the light artillery. It was manufactured by Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass. The sword has a single-edged curved blade. There is a broad fuller that runs from the ricasso to within 6 inches of the point. The obverse side of the ricasso is stamped “1864 M.M.”. The reverse side is marked “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass”. Only “Chicopee, Mass” is visible. The grip is wood carved with leather and wound with twisted wire. The brass hilt and pommel have a wonderful aged patina and shine in a mellow tone. The scabbard has a beautiful patina. The blade has a nice smooth surface and remains bright. The brass wire wrapping on the handle is tight and still shiny. There were only 2,513 of these made.
The curved blade measures 32” with the grip, handguard, and pommel measuring 5.5” in length, while the overall length with scabbard is 39.5”.
A wonderful example of a Civil War dated Light Artillery saber – perfect for the collector of Civil War memorabilia and period edged weapons. [cm][ph:L]
