This is an interesting item, being a short ceremonial dress sword or “hanger” modeled after a bayonet. The sword is 23.5” long overall with 19” blade. Grip and cross guard are designed as a faux bayonet; the guard featuring a muzzle ring and the brass grip with a decorative locking spring. However, there is no locking spring button nor a cutout atop the grip for a muzzle bayonet lug.

The blade is unsharpened. Both sides of the blade are etched along much of their length featuring floral and military motifs. Ricasso on left side is stamped with a king’s head and knight’s helmet over “WK&C” (lightly double stamped). This particular logo was in use from 1883 to 1918.

The tooled leather scabbard has brass throat and tip. Throat has brass hook. Leather is in fine condition save one “fold” midway that has not weakened the structure of the scabbard. Stitching remains complete and unbroken.

Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Company (W, K & C) was the amalgamation of two very old Solingen family companies in 1883. Both companies had had their own trademark. For Weyersburg it was King's head and for Kirschbaum it was a Knight's head. Upon their merger the two trademarks were combined and appeared on the ricasso of blades from 1883 until 1918 and the end of the monarchy in Germany. With the end of the monarchy, it's not surprising the company decided to banish their "King" logo and continue on with solely the Knight. The monarchy was out of favor and the company was still in the business of selling swords to State organizations.  [jet][ph:L]
