In 1852, the Navy Department adopted an officer sword which varied slightly from the previous model 1841 Officer’s Sword. The 1852 Navy Regulations described the m1852 Naval Officer’s Sword as a “cut and thrust blade, not less than twenty-six inches, nor more than twenty-nine inches long, half-basket hilt, grip white: Scabbards of black leather. Mountings of yellow gilt; and all as per pattern.”
This eye-catching piece is a premium example of an exceedingly rare edged weapon of the period. The black leather scabbard is in excellent condition with a roughly 1” separation of the pressed seam on the upper third between the throat and middle band and retains a rich, dark finish. The gilded brass throat, middle band, and throat show minimal wear and still shine in bright yellow as per Naval regulations of the day. A strongly stamped “AMES MFG CO. CHICOPEE MASS” is found on the obverse of the throat band.
The ornate half-basket hilt features a dolphin head knuckle-bow and a proud USN with floral designs on the counter-guard. The pommel is a separate cap modeled after a Phrygian helmet and is adorned with an eagle, surrounded by a star for each of the 13 original colonies that formed our Union. There are virtually no signs of tarnishing or cosmetic damage on any of the metal parts. The white fish skin grips and gilded wire wrapping are both in remarkable condition for the age of the piece.
The blade itself is slightly curved and very bright. Intricately etched and frosted motifs include a trident design, fouled and shielded anchors, a USN banner, floral patterning, and eagle perched atop a naval gun. Just above the ricasso, the blade is etched with an ornated Ames marking reading “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass.” The leather washer is intact and in excellent condition.
