A good example of the Moro kris, having the characteristic wavy blade of the kris, but made  wider, heavier, and with more shallow curves, definitely a weapon made for cutting or slashing as well as the thrust rather than purely thrusting as with the narrower blade types. The grip swells toward the flat pommel and is fully wrapped with rattan, both giving a more secure grip. The base of the blade has the standard form, wider on one side than the other, and has sculpted decoration that is ornate, but simpler by comparison with some, at least along the longer edge. The blade is smooth metal, with a little brown near the hilt but mostly a gray with some darker gray spots and not showing the prominent striations or pamor of pattern welding as in the more decorative examples. The edge is good, showing just a couple of very narrow, shallow nicks not very visible. The very tip of the blade is missing, looking very much like it was intentionally clipped, perhaps to indicate it was no longer a functional weapon, though it could still do a good deal of damage.

Moro is used to cover several tribes among the Muslim population of the southern Philippine islands. They actively resisted Spanish colonial attempts at conversion and in the early 20th century were in combat with U.S. troops in trying to establish a separate nation, with the determination and ferocity of some of their warriors in close combat said to have played a part in the U.S. military’s decision to increase the caliber of the issue pistol.  [sr][ph:L]
