The blade of the sword is so slightly curved that it looks straight at first glance. It is single-edged with a false edge extending back about 6 inches from the point. There is a wide deep fuller which runs from the ricasso to the beginning of the false edge. The right side of the blade is decorated with etched designs which include an American eagle with a ribbon with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The blade is marked with a deep rectangle-like stamp on the ricasso. The left side bears the letters "U.S." at mid blade and “SCHULER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM, NEW-YORK” on the ricasso. The spine is unmarked. The blade is semi-bright with scattered patches of dark oxidation overall.

The grip is interesting as it is Gutta Purcha. A double-twist of copper wire is wrapped around the grip. The guard is brass and of the half-basket design filled with pierced floral designs. There is a single quillon atop the basket and a knuckle guard running from the basket back to an engraved pommel.

The leather scabbard remains in very fine condition. The throat, ring mount, and drag are brass. Drag and throat remain firmly attached, while the middle ring mount is loose. Stitching is unbroken and there are no folds or breaks in the leather. Very nice piece.  [jet] [ph:L]
