Classic Civil War cavalry saber made by Ames Manufacturing Company. Sword is in overall very good condition. Blade is bright with only a few very minor edge nicks. Ricasso is strongly stamped with maker’s name, “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICKOPEE” on one side and “US / A.D.K.” on the other. Original leather washer remains in place.
Brass guard and basket are good. Pommel cap has a small “JM” inspector’s initials on rim. All brass exhibits smooth mellow patina. Grip is in very good condition with original leather wrap and double-twist of wire.
Scabbard is in similar excellent condition. No dents, traces of old plating, no wear on the drag. Drag stamped “534”. Complete with both rings and throat. A great specimen. [jet] [ph:L]
