Offered here is a scarce and superb Model 1840 Medical Staff sword by N.P. Ames.
The sword and scabbard measure approximately 37.5” overall. Blade is 30” long. Blade surface remains bright with scattered spots of dark oxidation and wear. Etching and engraving on the blade remains visible with some background frosting also remaining. One side features florals, flags and the legend “U.S. Medical Staff”. The other side has an eagle and panoply. The ricasso is engraved, “N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield.” Original cloth “washer” remains in place at junction of blade and guard.
Brass guard and handle are secured with an acorn-shaped nut. Grip has a very slight wobble. German silver letters “MS” are applied to the shield on the face of the cross guard. On the top of the grip is a cast eagle inside an oval. A very detailed and ornate guard and handle.
The scabbard is also brass, with brass mounts, throat, and drag. Upper mount has two rings, middle mount has a single ring. Scabbard is free of dents and remains in spectacular condition. Engraved on back side near the throat is, “N.P. AMES / Cutler / Cabotville / MASS.”
This sword is in wonderful overall condition. [jet] [ph:L]
