Sword has a nice cast brass hilt. Top has pineapple shaped pommel cap and a molded grip with acorn and oak leaf motif. Near the top of the grip on both sides is a medallion with a spread-winged eagle at center of the medallion on the obverse. Counterguard is made up of two shields. The obverse shield has thirteen cast stars and applied silver letters “M. D.” The reverse shield is blank. Extending out from each side of the shields are gracefully scrolled quillons. There is some discoloration on the edge of the shield and on the quillons.
The blade is bright and elliptical in cross-section. Etching is strong. The decoration on the obverse has a panoply of flags, foliate, and a spread-winged eagle. The reverse has the same basic design but includes the wording “U.S. MEDICAL STAFF” while the ricasso is etched with “AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE, MASS.” Blade does not appear to have any nicks in the edges but there is a small amount of light pitting in the areas.
Brass scabbard is undented. The top mount has a sunburst at the center of a medallion within a triangle of oak leaves. This top mount has two suspension rings, one on either side. The second mount is larger than the first with a full oak branch at center with a single suspension ring. Throat is missing. At the very bottom is an ornately decorated drag. [ad] [ph:L]
