The full title of the book is “A REGIMENTAL HISTORY. THE ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIFTH NEW YORK STATE VOLUNTEERS” by Chaplain Ezra D. Simons and published by the author in New York in 1888.

The book meas. approx. 5.75 x 9.25 inches and runs 352 pages including a roster with an unpaginated alphabetical listing of battles fought during the Civil War and an index. Volume has numerous woodcut illustrations and page 139, though present, has suffered some damage and a Xerox of the page has been inserted.

Covers show light to moderate surface wear and light rubbing. Upper front has an embossed drum with crossed muskets and accoutrements done in gold while the title is present in gold ink on the spine, but faded. Front and back signatures are good.

The 125th New York was organized in Troy on August 27, 1862. Their first colonel was George L. Willard who would later command a brigade and be killed in action at Gettysburg.

The 125th was assigned to the Middle Department and in September of 1862 they were captured at Harper’s Ferry by Stonewall Jackson and became part of the “HARPER’S FERRY COWARDS.”

After their exchange they eventually joined the Army of the Potomac as part of the 2nd Corps. They saw action at Gettysburg where they lost heavily expunging the “coward” epithet, Bristoe Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.

During its service the regiment lost 16 officers and 224 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others who survived their wounds. [ad] [ph:L]
