This sword is patterned after the Ames manufactured 1859 Marine musician's sword but this post-war specimen was made by Horstmann of Philadelphia.
The Marine version of the musician sword had a half counterguard (one horizontal and the other inner guard, folded down) where the Army version had none. The July 1861 contract for Marine musician swords called for only one guard and did away with the folded inner guard altogether.
The sword offered here follows the1859 pattern with the half counterguard.
The drawn sword meas. approx. 30.00 inches overall with a blade that is 24.00 inches long. The blade is semi-bright with light scattered mottling. It has a 22.00 inch stopped fuller and is marked on the obverse ricasso with “HORSTMANN” over “PHILADELPHIA.” The blade has several small nicks and the washer is gone. During the Civil War these swords were void of any etching. This one, being of the post-war pattern, bears an engraving on the reverse side of “USMC” flanked by scrollwork.
The hilt is cast brass with a ribbed grip and a round pommel. Single knuckle bow comes around to end in a round quillon. Guards are as discussed above.
Leather scabbard is complete with both the brass throat and drag. Throat has the stud for attaching to a leather frog. However, the scabbard is broken in half approx. 2.00 inches below the throat plate. Leather surface shows heavy wear with several other weak points and a good bit of surface finish loss.
This is a rare sword in good condition but with a scabbard that is of lesser quality. [jet][ph:L]
