The drawn saber meas. approx. 41.00 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 35.00 inches with a central fuller that is 27.50 inches long. The surface of the blade is bright but it does have some light scattered mottling and rub marks. The edge does not show any nicks though there are some signs of a minor attempt to sharpen part of the edge. The obverse ricasso has a good “U.S.” over inspector’s initials of “C.E.W.” The date “1862” is at bottom and is just visible above the leather washer. The reverse ricasso has a good maker’s mark of “D. J. MILLARD CLAYVILLE, N.Y.” Entire leather washer remains at the base of the blade.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows some wear and the twisted wire is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard have a mellow patina. Pommel cap has inspector’s initials of “C. E.W.” Hilt assembly is tight.
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard is semi-bright with scattered dark oxidation. Scabbard has some minor dings on the lower third but nothing to be concerned about.
Millard was one of several contractors making the Model 1860 for the Army but his was one of the smaller contracts making his swords a little more desirable and harder to find. [ad] [ph:L]
