This Model 1852 Naval Officer’s sword, complete with original leather scabbard is in good-plus original condition. The blade was manufactured by Clauberg of Solingen and is so marked.
Carried by many ranking Federal naval officers during the Civil War, this steel-edged weapon measures a total length of 34.75 inches from point to pommel. It features a 29.00 inch blade with a 19.50 inch stopped wide fuller and a 17.75 inch narrow fuller. The bright blade shows very small amounts of mottling. The blade is embellished via acid etching on both sides but the decoration is now so faint it is almost impossible to see. The obverse ricasso is blank while the reverse is stamped with a standing knight and the Clauberg mark mentioned above. Visibly etched just above the reverse ricasso is “IRON PROOF.” The edge is free of nicks.
The hilt has a highly detailed, single-band cutout brass guard and knuckle bow cast in one piece. Prominent on the brass hilt are 5/16” high raised block letters “USN” surrounded by finely cutout acorns and foliate. Covering the center-swelled handle is a grip of almost white sharkskin or ray skin which is tight and in very good condition, though dirty. Thin, brass, twisted wire is original and in excellent, tight condition. Phrygian pommel cap is border-engraved in a floral pattern and is tight to the handle. Full cloth blade washer sits at the ricasso and the serpent-head quillon retains its forward and down thrust. Not bent.
Leather scabbard is in matching good condition. Leather is free of any weak spots and has very little crazing. The scabbard has the brass throat and mounts with knotted rope motif. Brass drag has serpentine edge. Drag shows some light wear and minor scratches. Both rings are present on the mounts. Front of the throat has a small dent and light oxidation along the top edge.
