Item Code: 1181-22

Nice representation of Civil War era medical bottle that reads embossed on the side “DR MCMUNN’S/ ELIXIR OF OPIUM.” Dr. John B. McMunn developed the elixir in the 1830s advertising as “This is a pure and essential extract from the native drug” (from Library of Congress).  The drug was said to cure a mirid of ailments including pain relief and irritation, anxiety, act as an anticonvulsant, and it also was a sedative.  The campaign for Dr. McMunn’s Elixir of Opium was so successful because it was purported to be a non-habit forming.

The item is a clear aqua glass with rolled lip.  It measures 4 ¼” in height and 7/8” at the base.  There is brown residue inside the glass.  Some places on the glass have bubbles from manufacturer. [mk] [ph:L]
