VERY RARE RICHMOND ARSENAL AMMUNITION CRATE FOR MUSKET CARTRIDGES DATED 1863

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 775-02

This is a rarely seen wood crate for musket cartridges from the Richmond Arsenal. It remains in good original condition. It measures approximately 16” (plus handles on both sides) x 12” x 8”.

The exterior is painted brown with a natural interior. The front and back are nicely stenciled in black, “1000 / Cartridges Cal 57 or 58 / Elongated Ball / Richmond Arsenal 1863”. The ends of the crate, with handles, are unmarked.

A period replaced lid is with the crate as it was used as a trunk. There are two iron hinges present although the lid is currently detached from the bottom. There is an old mouse hole crewed through in one corner.

Bottom shows water and bug damage with some loss in the center. All stenciling remains readable.  Wood, other than on the bottom, remains strong and solid.

This is a scarce Confederate Civil War ammunition crate.   [jet] [ph:L]
