This period CDV shows a bust view of first lieutenant Finny Loomis of the 8^th Ohio Volunteers.

On the reverse of this image, Lt. Loomis has signed the image in period ink. His inscription reads: “Compliments / of / Lieut. F.R. Loomis / Co. K 8^th O.V. Infantry.” The inscription itself is faded but it still legible.

A Whitehurst Gallery backmark is present; it reads: “Whitehurst / Gallery / 434 Pennsylvania Avenue / Washington, D.C.” Below, the photographer is listed as “M.J. Powers.”

The CDV is in good condition but shows some minor surface dirt and smudging. The card mount is strong with no bends or breaks.

The badge included with the CDV is in great condition. The ribbon bar, ribbon, and drop are all present and intact with no chips to the enamel or to the silk ribbon. There is some wear to the ribbon in the center of the white field, but overall, the ribbon is in excellent condition. There is a large 3^rd division, 2^nd corps badge front and center of the top of the badge, where the 8^th Ohio was organized. There are crossed flags below the corps badge. There is some loss of the detail of the flags. The banners cannot be seen but the flagpoles are still present and visible. The pin bar the ribbon hangs from is a heavy metal pin that reads “member.” The drop is attached to the ribbon by a metal ring clasped into the ribbon and bears a depiction of the Ohio state seal. The reverse of the drop reads “Annual / Reunion / 8^th O.V.I. / Oberlin, O. / Sept. 17-18. / 1902.”

Loomis was wounded at first during a charge at Bloody Lane at Antietam and again at Gettysburg according to information supplied by FindAGrave. However, his service records were unavailable to be sure of the specifics of his woundings. Despite his being wounded, Loomis went on to serve through the regiment’s mustering out in July of 1864. During Loomis’ service he served on Brigadier General Samuel Carroll’s staff.  Post-war, Loomis married Catherine Kilmer at the opening of the following year, and the two had one son, Clare, who died of typhoid fever in his early twenties.

Finney served as the postmaster of Lodi, Ohio and eventually served as a Republican representative for the Ohio legislature serving only one term. Eventually, Loomis bought into a newspaper and served as the editor of the Medina Gazette and later the Norwalk Chronicle.

Loomis died in Lodi in 1911; he is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery with his wife and son. [cla] [ph:L]
