Chest-up view of Major Robert Newton Hull in uniform. He wears a double-breasted jacket with collar and sleeve insignia just visible. The image is clear with good contrast. Corners of the mount have been trimmed. No photographer's backmark. A period ink identification is on the back.
Hull was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 26th Georgia Infantry on August 5, 1861. He mustered out in May of 1862 when the regiment was reorganized and ordered to Virginia. He accepts an appointment as "Drill Master" at the "Camp of Instruction" in Georgia in June. He was commissioned as Captain of Company A, 66th Georgia Infantry on August 1, 1863. Promoted to Major on October 8, 1863. Wounded in July 1864, November 1864 (Franklin), and February 1865 (Binnicker's Bridge, SC). The Augusta Daily Constitutionalist, on March 30, 1865 reported: "Major R.N. Hull, of the 66th Georgia Infantry, was shot through the left temple while covering the retreat of our forces at Binnicker's Bridge, Orangeburg District, S.C., on the 9th of February. He was taken by the enemy to the nearest house and expired in two hours. He was so gallant as to elicit praise from the foe."
The 26th Georgia first served at St. Simons Island and Savannah in the Department of Georgia. In May of 1862 the regiment was reorganized and Colonel Styles resiged and Lt. Colonel Lane and Major Gardner retired.
The 66th Georgia was organized at Atlanta, Georgia, during the summer of 1863. It was assigned to Wilson's, C.H. Stevens', and H.R. Jackson's Brigade, participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Atlanta to Nashville, and ended the war in North Carolina. In December, 1863, this regiment contained 513 men and 419 arms but was greatly reduced when it surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its commanders were Colonel J. Cooper Nisbet, Lieutenant Colonel A.S. Hamilton, and Major R. Newton Hull. [jet] [ph:L]
