Early hilt that has a hand chased quillon embellishment of a flower bud. Acanthus leaves are cast into the underside facing the blade. Blade strike of K&C on the obverse ricasso. Horstmann and Bros NY on the reverse ricasso. Blade is engraved with typical Horstmann 1840 etch patterns of foliate and stand of arms. Generous amount of frost still remains on this early blade. Grip is shark skin with brass wire. The scabbard is steel with plain "keystone cut" model 1850 Staff and Field mounts and drag.
