Maker-mark: [obverse ricasso] "D.J. Millard/ Clayville NY"; [reverse ricasso] "U.S. C.E.W./1862". Markings lightly worn, but legible. Light gray, moderately bright blade, exhibiting film of salt & pepper condensation. Blade was long ago sharpened; no dings. Thick leather washer. Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical. Brass work displays small tarnish spots while exhibiting light coppery patina. Original leather grip & wire wrap are both tight, with leather exhibiting slight cracking, with one continuous break extending down from top wire wrap to cross guard. Scabbard display consistent plum patina. Throat, mounts and drags in excellent condition; one minor dent. Else VG and solid. An attractive early war-dated saber, from highly respected maker.
